미국곡물협회 (U.S. Grains Council)는 미국산 옥수수와 에탄올 등 곡물과 곡물 가공제품 제품의 해외시장 개척과 교역확대를 위해 1960년에 설립된 비영리 사단법인이다. 미국의Washington, D.C.에 본부를 두고 있으며 한국을 비롯한 아시아, 중동, 유럽, 아프리카 및 중남미 등 전 세계 27개 소에 해외사무소와 연락사무소를 두고 있다. 미국곡물협회 한국사무소는 1972년 6월에 설립되어 2022년에 50주년을 맞이하였으며, 지난 50년간 한국의 축산, 사료 및 식품가공업계와의 상호협력을 통해 기술 발전과 안정적인 곡물 및 곡물제품 무역을 위해 노력하였다. 최근에는 전세계적인 기후위기에 대응하는 탄소중립의 요구에 따라 온실가스 감축, 대기환경 개선을 위한 휘발류 대체연료인 옥수수기반 바이오에탄올의 보급확대와 의무혼합 정책도입을 위한 홍보와 지원 활동에 주력하고 있다.

미국곡물협회는 전세계적인 기후위기에 대응하는 탄소중립의 요구에 따라 온실가스 감축, 대기환경 개선을 위한 휘발류 대체연료인 옥수수기반 바이오에탄올의 보급확대와 의무혼합 정책도입을 위한 홍보와 지원 활동에 주력하고 있다. 바이오에탄올은 기존의 휘발유 대비 탄소배출량을 46%까지 절감할 수 있는 가장 즉각적이고 경제적이며 효과가 큰 탄소감축 솔루션이다.

The U.S. Grains Council is a non-profit corporation established in 1960 in Washington D.C. to develop overseas markets and expand trade for grains and co-products such as corn and ethanol, etc. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C., USA, and has overseas offices and liaison offices in 27 locations around the world, including Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa and Latin America. The U.S. Grains Council Korea office was established in June 1972 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. Over the past 50 years, cooperation with Korea\'s livestock, feed and food processing industries has contributed to industrial development and stable grains and co-products trade between two countries. Recently, in line with the demand for carbon neutrality in response to the recent global climate crisis, it is concentrating on promoting and supporting activities to expand the use and supply of corn-based ethanol, an alternative fuel to gasoline, to reduce greenhouse gases and improve the atmospheric environment.

• 미국곡물협회 부스에서는 한국의 수송부문의 탄소감축, 대기환경 개선 및 에너지시큐리에 기여 할 수 있는 옥수수기반 바이오 에탄올의 보급확대와 에탄올 정책 확대의 필요성을 홍보한다. 또한 바이오에탄올 경품 퀴즈 이벤트, 에탄올 주유기 모델 헤시테그 에벤트, 에탄올 설문조사 등 다양한 프로그램을 통해 경품을 제공할 계획이다.

  U.S. Grains Council publicize to expand the supply of corn-based bioethanol and to introduce ethanol policy which can contribute to carbon reduction, air quality improvement and energy security in Korea\'s transportation sector.   2021년 서울에서 개최된 기후위기와 바이오연료 심포지엄에서 스테판 뮬러 미국 시카고 일리노이 주립대 교수는 한국에서 유통되는 연료 샘플을 분석한 결과 한국이 기존 휘발유에 10% 에탄올을 혼합하면 매년 온실가스 310만톤을 감축할 수 있다는 연구 결과를 내놓은 바 있다. 2000년대 초반부터 지난 20여년간 한국의 정부연구소와 민간 기업들이 수행한 바이어에탄올 연료의 경제성, 타당성 및 시범 보급 사업들을 통해 바이오에탄올은 현재 운행중인 차량과 연료 공급 인프라에 적용하여도 문제가 없다는 결론을 얻은 바 있다.
  게다가 SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel)로 불리는 바이오 항공유에도 바이오에탄올이 가장 효율적인 대안연료로 떠오르고 있다. 한국에서도 바이오에탄올에 대한 많은 연구와 실증시험이 진행된 만큼 많은 전문가들로부터 2050 탄소중립 실현을 위해 에탄올 혼합 제도의 도입이 요구되고 있다. 한국의 산업자원부도 2022년 10월 한국의 에탄올 정책 도입의 필요성에 공감하여 2024년과 2025년 바이오에탄올의 시범사업을 실시하겠다고 공표 한바 있다. 미국곡물협회는 산업자원부가 민간기업들과 함께 추진하는 바이오에탄올 시범사업이 성공적으로 수행될 수 있도록 협력하고, 정부 유관기관 및 정유사 등 연료 업계과도 협력하여 한국에도 빠른 시기에 에탄올 혼합정책을 도입될 수 있도록 정보제공, 기술 지원 등의 노력을 강화할 예정이다. 2050 탄소중립을 위한 전기차시대로의 전환에는 많은 투자와 시간이 걸릴 것이지만 바이오 연료는 당장 휘발유에 혼합하여 탄소를 절감할 수 있는 가장 현실적인 대안이다.

  At the Climate Crisis and Biofuels Symposium held in Seoul in 2021, Steffen Mueller, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, analyzed fuel samples distributed in South Korea and found that 10% ethanol blended gasoline would reduce 3.1 million tons of greenhouse gases annually. Since the early 2000s, through the economic feasibility, feasibility, and pilot supply projects of bioethanol fuel carried out by government research institutes and private companies in South Korea for the past 20 years, it was concluded that there is no problem in applying bioethanol to vehicles currently in operation and fuel supply infrastructure in South Korea.
  In addition, bioethanol is emerging as the most efficient alternative fuel for bio jet fuel called SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel). As many studies and demonstration tests on bioethanol already have been conducted in South Korea, many experts are demanding the introduction of an ethanol blending system to realize 2050 carbon neutrality. Korea\'s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy also announced in October 2022 that it would conduct a pilot project for bioethanol in 2024 and 2025 in agreement with the necessity of introducing an ethanol policy in Korea. The U.S. Grains Council will cooperate with the government agencies and the relevant industries to successfully carry out the bio-ethanol pilot project to introduce an fuel ethanol policy in Korea as soon as possible. We plan to strengthen our efforts to provide information and provide technical support. It will take a lot of investment and time to transition to the electric car era for carbon neutrality by 2050, but bioethanol is the most realistic alternative to reduce carbon by mixing it with gasoline right away.
